Why Wall Hung Toilets Are Taking Over Contemporary Bathrooms
Wall hung toilets revolutionise modern Australian bathrooms: Sleek, space-saving designs for easy cleaning & accessibility. Learn pros/cons, installation tips & why they're perfect for small spaces or renos!
I'll be honest – a few years ago, I was totally against wall hung toilets. They seemed fussy, expensive, and frankly not suited at all for what is essentially, well, a loo. Yet here I am in 2025 writing about why they're everywhere—and confession time, I've actually changed my mind about them!
You cannot scroll through Instagram or Pinterest without seeing it: every beautifully designed bathroom from those on a budget to luxury-built ones in the jaw-dropping stratosphere features a smooth wall hung toilet, floating above the floor.

The Space Thing
First up, let's talk about the most apparent advantage—space. Or to put it more correctly, the appearance of it. I think this is the biggest reason people are making the switch: here in Australia, our bathrooms tend to be a little smaller.
When your toilet is actually floating off the ground with nothing beneath it, your eye travels all the way across that floor. The whole room feels bigger. It just does absolutely! I've seen it transform tiny, cramped ensuites into spaces that feel genuinely liveable and welcoming. A continuous line from floor to ceiling is the game changer, especially in those longish narrow bathroom layouts where every millimetre must be made to count for all its worth. Our customers always tell us how much it changes their bathrooms for the better.
But can we chat about cleaning for a moment? Because honestly, this may turn out to be the real winner here. No more wrestling the mop around the base of the toilet, no more grime in those impossible-to-reach spots where the pedestal meets the floor. You can literally sweep or mop straight under a wall hung toilet. As a mother of two boys, this is no small matter I can assure you.
The Look
There's something undeniably sleek about a wall hung toilet. They're minimalistic without being cold, contemporary without shouting "look at me!" They actually fade into the background, letting other features shine.
I've found this particularly works for presenting beautiful floor tiles or a gorgeous vanity. The wall hung toilet doesn't fight for attention. It's like the supporting actor who makes the star look even better.
And the lines! Everything is so clean and smoothed out. There's no big cistern dominating your bathroom space, there's no awkward pedestal breaking up the vertical lines of your wall tiles. It all just flows from top to bottom.

The Practical Bit
Here's where it gets tricky, and where a lot of people get surprised. Installing a wall hung toilet isn't simply a matter of swapping it for your old one. You need in wall cisterns, which means—yes, cutting out that wall. Modern in-wall commode suites are actually designed as complete support systems, integrating the concealed cistern and mounting frame into one unit, which makes planning and installation more straightforward in many bathroom layouts. This is why wall hung toilets are very effective in new builds or in the case of long remodels, but it can be trickier (and more expensive) if you're just doing a quick bathroom refresh.
The hidden cistern is located in the wall, concealed behind the wall panelling or tiles. Modern in wall cisterns are designed to fit within standard wall cavities, making installation more straightforward than many people expect. It's clever design, but it does mean more construction work upfront. Your plumber needs access to install the frame, and your tiler has to be careful with his work around it. It's definitely not a DIY weekend project unless you're very savvy.
But once it's in—and this is important—it's incredibly reliable. The cistern mechanisms have come such a long way. They are built to last and designed for easy access if (touch wood) anything ever needs fixing.
The height is adjustable during installation too, which is great news for taller people who've spent their lives hunching over toilets that are too low. You can customize it to your household's needs. We set ours at a height that works for everyone and it's made such a difference to comfort.

What About These Fancy Smart Toilets?
Alright, so smart toilets are having their moment, and many come in wall-hung versions. Heated seats, automatic lids, built-in bidets, mood lighting. Are they necessary? Not at all. Are they pretty cool? Yeah, kinda.
I have tested a few in various showrooms and at some supplier events, and look, after sitting on a heated toilet seat when it's a freezing winter morning, it's very difficult to go back. The automatic opening lid turns out to be especially charming—one less thing to think about when you're stumbling to the bathroom at 3 am.
Smart toilets tend to be more of an investment and you need to think about the electrical points, a point to consider in renovation. However, if you have friends who are already doing that work or want to extend their enjoyment of using them wall mounted facilities your own home installations too, they're worth considering since they do exist. The Australian market has seen a surge in demand for smart toilets, particularly in high-end renovations and new builds. Don't feel like you need them – they're definitely a luxury add-on, not essential.

The Mix and Match Metho
This is what I love about the current toilet market - there's so much variety to choose from now. You can buy several wall hung options at almost any price point. Naturally, you can spend thousands on designer pieces, but there are also some very good mid-range style options if you shop around that both look fantastic and perform beautifully.
When it comes to renovations, I'm known for taking a high-low approach. Splurge on that beautiful natural stone or those incredible tiles, then balance it out with more affordable pieces like the toilet suite and tapware. The point is to get the right overall look without needing to spend megabucks on every single thing.
The beauty with a wall hung toilet is that they tend to look very much the same once installed. It's often down to the quality of cistern mechanism and finish of the ceramic; But from a visual point? Well, a mid-range wall hung toilet can look just as slick as a higher-priced one.

Is It Suitable for You?
A wall hung toilet is not for every bathroom, and that is fine too. If your current toilet is working perfectly well, you might not need to change it. If you're refreshing the bathroom on a budget, it's best to leave it alone!
At the same time, if you are in the process of renovating your house anyway, or constructing a new one, or if the toilet you now have is on its last legs? Then I would say definitely so. The space-saving benefits work brilliantly in most Australian bathrooms, and the sleek look suits just about any design style—from super modern right through to classic English country looks.
In particular, they work well in ensuites where you are trying to create a hotel-bathroom feel. When choosing between different toilet suites, consider not just the aesthetic appeal but also the quality of components and warranty offered by the manufacturer. There's just something about a wall hung toilet that raises the whole space and almost at once it means high quality, close attention to detail.
The Verdict
Wall hung toilets aren't just another fad. If they were, to tell you the truth: They've been popular long enough that they're here to stay, well beyond any trend.
It's true they take more time to install - they're more complex than floor-standing toilets and require more work. Yet in terms of appearance and performance, the trade-off is rather worthwhile.
Would I choose one again? Absolutely yes - and when we get around to renovating the kids' bathroom (it's on the list!), we'll definitely go with another wall hung toilet. Comparing different toilet suites will help you find the right balance between functionality and budget for your specific needs. Some things just make sense.
It's a practical choice that happens to make your bathroom both work better and look better at the same time.
For something that quietly does its job, it really can make a big difference when done right.
